[Copy] Deposition & Extract Louis Bolong — 10 Sep^t 1796 Capt Pike to Cap^t Pasteur 30 aug^t 1796 1 copy Knox County } S— Personally appeared before me James Johnson Esq^r a Justice of the peace in & for the said County, Louis Bolong, & being sworn according to law, saith, that on or about the 6^th day of August 1796 M^r Horet Missionary at this place, saw him this dep^t & requested that he would get all the Indians he could get to come to his room about 10 oclock to see a Frenchman that then lived at M^r Vandenburghs accordingly he this dep^t did, & attended himself, three Indians met, & M^r Horet wrote to the said frenchman to come — the Indians were ready — the frenchman stood saying that the Indians must away before he attended — when he did come he the frenchman & M^r Horet walked together along time, then this deponent went away & about 10 oclock the next day the said frenchman M^r Horet this deponent, two Indians and some other people met at M^r Horets house the Indians took the frenchman by the hand & said look at us we are very poor — we are scattered like chickens we have no father no mother nor village — The frenchman holding [undecipherable] son by the hand said I see you lost poor but by & by you will see something my Brother I am a big man, by & by
