[Duplicate 20 July] Capt Edw^d Millers Accountants Office West Point 6 July 1796 Sir, In the absence of the Accountant I have to inform you that agreeably to his Letters to you of the 30^th Ult^o — your Recruiting account has been under examination and the result is that the amount thereof cannot be passed to your Credit for the following reasons — John Verdery has not been mustered, and there is no certificate of the Magistrate of his being an able bodied Man — — No Receipts of the Magistrate for attesting the Soldier — No Inlistments accompanying the Account— That part of the Account for apprehending, W^m Sewards— which relates to the expences, the particulars thereof must be stated by him and the accounts & receipts produced together with his Oath to the propriety of the Charges and your Certificate that the Man who was apprehended was a Deserter The payment to James Trowbridge cannot be all admitted the premium for apprehending the Deserter will be allowed on your certifying that the Man was a Deserter and that Trowbridge apprehended him It has been an uniform rule in the Office that when a Soldier is sent in pursuit of Deserters and his expences paid by the publick he is not allowed the premium for apprehending. In this case however as the expences and premium do not differ materially you will be allowed the latter but the expences will be rejected when the vouchers before mentioned are forwarded Your account will be settled— I am &c In the absence of the Acco^t Peter Hagner P^r Clk
