[117] West point Roly for the Month of May, so that when he arrives at this place I can settle with him — I have received the Muster and pay Roly of the Corps of Artificers and Engineers which has been examined and the amount found due thereon being two thousand three — hundred and thirty six Dollars will be remitted to Nicholas — Fisher Supervisor New york to be by him paid to George Fleming as Capt Britt is expected in Town before the Money could have arrived at West point — A list of the differences arising on examination of this pay roly is enclosed to Mr Fleming — As the muster roly does not mention any thing of the three Men who you say had Deserted I can take no Notice thereof their whole pay is accordingly remitted — A Muster Roly is intended to set forth every circumstance that has taken place with a Soldier or officer during the time for which the Muster is taken at least so far as will affect their pay — In future you will therefore give directions to have this done when a Man Deserts it should be mentioned — If this had been done in the present pay Roly I would have Deducted from his pay for the time at least which he was absent — The Col^o may suspend any punishment to the Deserter but I dont conceive he can direct his pay to be received by him for any time whilst the Desertery was absent?
