[Cap^t Jas Bruff / Albany / State of New yorke-] [Accountants Office / June 11^th 1796] Sir Mr Sam^l Lewis Clerk to D. will remit you at Albany the sum of Seven hundred and fifty Dollars — Six hundreds of which are on account of the pay of Yourself & the Detachment under your command for one Month & One hundred and fifty is for the Retained Bounty of your Men — and for which sums you will Receipt to said Lewis to be accountable to the Accountant of the War Department; and after you have paid your Detachment you will forward your Receipts to this Office as usual — I enclose you Blank Muster Rolls and Receipt Roles, on rec^t of which you will Muster your Detachment for the Month of May and pay them agreeably to the Pay Role to be formed therefrom; you will please to Note in the Muster Role from whence the Men joined you, who enlisted them & that I may be enabled to make them up hereafter for any Back-Pay or Bounty which they may have due them - accuracy in this business is highly necessary. You will please to be cautious on this head — I am &c Wm Simmons — [Major Lewis Toward / West Point — / Sir] [Accountants Office / June 11 — 1796 —] I Received your letter of the 7 Inst the blank Muster and Pay Rolls which you have Requested were forwarded last post to Lieu^t Mutenberg I now enclose you Blank inspection Returns I have written to Cap^t Bruff at Albany fully on the Subject of the Detachment under his Command and have forwarded Six hundred Dollars for one Months pay thereof and one hundred and fifty Dollars on a/c of the Retained bounty due the Men and have enclosed to him Blank Muster Pay and Receipt Roles for the purposes of Mustering & paying the Men. If Monies are advanced on account of pursuing Deserters or the expences are allowed to the Soldiers who are in the pursuit it is understood, that they are not entitled to the Ten Dollars reward. When the necessity of the case Requires it — Cap^t Flemming may from time to time, advance Monies out of the funds placed in his hands by Mr. Freemary for the pursuit of Deserters on your Orders which must [strikethrough: be] accounted for immediately on return of the pursuers by presenting an account and swearing thereto and return the balance (if any) to Mr. Flemming. The Secretary of War has not Decided on the business of your brother in law he is at present unwell and seldom comes to the office, If I hear of any thing worthy of Notice I will inform you.
