Detachments to Oswego and Niagara
Document 1796Capt. Lewis is asked by James McHenry and George Washington to deliver a letter to Governor-General Lord Dorchester in Canada. Lewis is to inform Lord Dorchester that detachments of U.S. troops are in motion to take possession of the posts at Oswego and Niagara and that they have orders to evacuate, based on the terms of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (Jay Treaty). Lewis is to immediately return to Philadelphia after delivering the order, and as part of a detachment from West Point, will proceed to march to Oswego and Niagara.
