Mr George Clymer 27th May Recd June 1796 [circled] 162 [stamped] Received from State Dep’t. Nov. 24. 1894. R.P.O. 401310. Major Samuel Hodgdon Philadelphia Ref Capt Simkins [Stamped] Received from State Dep’t. Nov. 24. 1894. R.P.O. 401310. De Sir Mrs. Clymer after being some time at sea became so extremely ill that Captain Simkins put her on shore, at my desire, at Charles Town as the first port the vessel could reach. To this occasion was owing Capt. Simkins deviation from his proper course to St. Mary’s - true it is thought from the [undecipherable] leakiness of his vessel he might have been justified in stopping short of St Mary’s but he would doubtless have continued it but for the circumstance first mentioned. This I have stated to you at the instance of Capt Simkins who was apprehensive that some degree of blame might be attached to him providing of this should the occasion not be known. Capt Simkin’s conduct on board has been such as to give the greatest satisfaction both to Mrs. C and myself. I am De Sir Yr obedt St Geo Clymer [left margin vertical text] Major Hodgdon
