West Point, May 25. 1796 Sir, Your favors of the Contents of 3^d & 7^th instant I duly received. I forwarded my duplicate receipts dated the 1^st instant to W. Cook for the March pay of the ordnance detachment and have received of Lieut [undecipherable] Freeman, Ch^y Potter of the Corps of Artillerists & Engineers, nine hundred and fifty six dollars & 74½ cents, being the balance of money that remained with him — for which I gave him duplicate receipts specifying the said money I hold subject to orders from your Office. I enclose you a receipt roll of the ordnance detachment for their March pay, amount 79 dollars — pay roll for their April pay, amount 79 dollars, and a general receipt from the hired artificers for their January pay, amount 306 dollars & 30 cents. I have been obliged to advance for the Public considerable of money to the persons employed here on account of their February, March & April pay, but want of money prevents my paying them entirely off and getting their receipts. I hope the money is on the way to me for the want of it distresses me much — I am with respect, Sir, Your most obedient humble servant, Geo.
