I received your letter of the 13th Inst together with the Muster and pay Rolls for the Corps of Art & Eng for the Month of April 1796 which has been examined and the amount being Three thousand two hundred and fifty five Dollars and 60 Cts which differs from your Statement Seven Dollars the Amount of Philip Sanders Pay which he received at this Office / —
This sum you will receive of Major Wm Hersey to whom you will give your Duplicate Rect He also carries out two Notes —
The enclosed account of Corpl McEntire's I return you for the purpose of paying the same —

Major William Hersey who accompanies you to West Point has charge of the Sum of Three Thousand — two hundred and fifty five Dollars & 60 being for the pay — Subsistence and forage of the Corps of Artis & Engs for the Month of April 1796 which Sum he is directed to pay to Lieut Instrument Freeman Sergt Pay Master at West Point or in case he is absent on your arrival he will pay the amount to you for which you will give him your Duplicate Rect In case you receive the Money you will proceed to pay the Corps agreeably to the Receipt Rolls — herewith and bring them with you on your return to this office — Your known ability in this line prevents the necessity of adding any thing on that head wishing you a pleasant Journey I am &c
