You had wished me to forward to you the letter of the Secretary at war which intitled me to an augmentation of pay. As I had no such letter, but only a letter from Major Rivardi who informed me of that circumstance, & who from that time never failed to draw notes in my favour at the rate of two dollars a day, I immediately applied to Major Rivardi himself. I communicated to him your correspondence with me, & requested him to raise all the difficulties that might come in my way. He promised me that he would write without delay to the late Secretary at war Colonel Pickering & remind him of his positive word on that subject. That he has undoubtedly done, & I do not suppose that any more difficulty may remain on that respect. I have at the same time forwarded to Major Rivardi a general account of expenditure made by me at Fort Whetstone point. The expense amounted then to 3291.45 — I have since discharged [part] of the bill of the well sinker, & that of the painter — Besides two months pay delivered to M^r Rodrigue according to orders. These three articles make 74.20 There fore my present expence is - - - - - - - - 3365.65 I have received at several times as part of my pay - - 317 - - on major Rivardi's notes The total expence on mine & Major Rivardi's notes is dollars cent 3672.65 - - - - - - - - I know that 5300^ds were sent down to Baltimore in the course of the last & beginning of the present year, & yet the whole of the Sum stated above has not been discharged.
