Middletown April 23. 1796 Sir Your Letter of april 8^th I have Received with directions to Call on John Chester Esq^r Supervisor, for the Sum of two Hundred Twenty three Dollars & twelve cents, which sum I have duly Received being pay for my self and men for the month of March 1796 with a Receipt Roll amounting to the above Sum — Also my recruiting account with some Remarks there on. Prine Haws Hugins, S. Chapman, & Thomas Mains, was as honestly paid their full Bounty as any Soldier I have Inlisted, in the hurry of Business in assisting Cap^t Bissell to commence his march are the reasons for the Omission of the Receipts, but they can be obtained if the men are alive, by applying to Captain Russell Bissell which I will immediately do — I have charged their full [strikethrough: Bounty] receipt in my account. George Bridgham and James Hagerty did Join Ensⁿ Martin as you will find p^r Letter which I here with transmit — James Stafford I inlisted the day I left Philadelphia with the advice of Captain Bradley, and Ordered Corp^l John Cole to take him to Captain Ashton for Inspection, and to bring him forward to this Rendezvous by M^r Ashtons permission Cole informed me that he obeyed my Orders, and that Stafford [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] deserted within a few days after — The Receipts for the premiums, for administring the Oath and Certificates I have obtained except those that live at a distance, I had rather loose than take the trouble to obtain their Receipts. — I herewith transmit nine Receipts, for the Bounties, with the Certificates and Receipts, for administring the Oath from the Justice of the Peace — You will find on due examination that the number I have Charged is Receipted for.
