Sir New Jersey Treasury Office April 21. 1796 I find by a Note of yours on the Statement of William Holmes Notes, from the department of war, that you suppose John Peck late Agent for the second Jersey Regiment in the Continental service settled his accounts as Agent at this Office — On which I have to Observe that by Direction of Congress and a Law of this State made in Conformity thereto, dated March 7. 1786 John Blair and John Peck agents of the first and second Jersey Regiments deposited in this Office A Number of finale settlements, Notes or Certificates for said Regiments to be delivered to the Proprietors thereof John Blair 292 and John Peck 87 Notes, which they Qualified to as all the Notes remaining in their hands of those they received from the Paymaster General as Agents, which were not delivered to the persons Entitled to them But they rendered No account of their proceedings or who they delivered the Notes or Certificates to, at this Office or to any Office in this State, as they were Continental Officers and Not accountable to the State of New Jersey among the Certificates I Received from John Peck there were Only Two on the Name of William Holmes, which I have delivered to him the 20 March Last — the Other two Notes of his, In your Statement N^o Signed by Payable to Amount 9299 John Pierce William Holmes 40.60 9540 Do — Do — 80 — Dollars 120 60/100 were Presented to me by John Mulford of Cumberland County New Jersey, for the Interest on the 29 April 1785 When I paid him One Years Interest thereon, But who he Received the Interest for, I Cannot tell, as he was a Collector of Taxes, and Brought Certificates for Different Persons to Receive the Interest thereon, you will Perceive this was before any of those Notes were deposited in this Office.
