[Stamp: State Dep't No. 21. 584, O 401810.] Major Craig the deputy Quarter Master at Pittsburg has desired me to express my Opinion of the compensation he might reasonably demand for extra services at that Post. Those extra services have been rendered by him as discharging the duties of Commissary of Military Stores, and Clothier for the upper posts on the Ohio. He also performed the duties of Muster-master to the levies in the Year 1791. The nature of his services would require the use of a horse, for which consequently forage should be allowed. [undecipherable] een, or rather of em[undecipherable] above men[undecipherable] [Section undecipherable due to water damage] a month [undecipherable] from the [undecipherable] stated the forage allowance at [undecipherable] six dollars a month the same which is allowed by the existing Acts of Congress at this time. From January 1^st 1793 he will obtain a compensation as Commissary of Provisions in addition to his other services and Claims. He repeatedly last Year desired me to fix this allowance but it was omitted tho' I intended to do it. For all his services thus Accumulated I should think him entitled to One Hundred Dollars a month; and to the two daily Rations & six dollars a month for Forage which the present Military Establishments allow to a deputy Quarter Master [undecipherable] [Section undecipherable due to water damage] [undecipherable] had served under [undecipherable] the whole of the revolution war [undecipherable] whose Industry & integrity the General placed entire confidence. Under those circumstances I submit to you my Opinion, that in addition to his pay as a deputy Quarter Master, Major Craig may justly claim for his extra services thirty dollars a month from May 1^st 1791 to December 31^st 1793. being three years and eight months ............................ $. 1320.
