Philad^a. 12 June 1796. Dear Sir. I write to you in the utmost hurry and confidence and beg that whatever you may think proper to do, that my name may be kept out of view. The treaty will be strictly complied with on the part of Great Britain, compensation of course will be made for our captured property; and we shall be put in possession of the posts at the time stipulated, from which we can, when we please, commence sucessful operations against Canada, should war become necessary, provided the house of Representatives make the appropriations required by treaty without clog or condition. If these appropriations are not so made, every hope may be considered as extinguished, and the country exposed to a scene of confusion. Can you do any thing in this crisis? Is it not the part of good men to give up lesser matters for the attainment of greater? Will we not have more in our power, and be in a better situation to demand concessions from Great Britain, when in possession of the posts, than without them? I am sure we will. I am sure that it is the wisest and best policy to confirm the present treaty, after which we can speak in a more commanding tone, and obtain points which at present it is in vain to attempt.
