Request for leave of absence to make voyage to China
Document 1796Operations in building and equipping frigate [presumably USS Chesapeake], that Dale is designated to command have been postponed, so Dale asks for leave of absence to make a voyage to China. Expects to return the following April. Understands that his pay will not continue, but would like to retain his rank in the Navy.
The Hon.e James McHenry Esqr Secretary of War Richard Dale [illegible] 8 April Philadelphia April 8th 1796 Sir/ As all the operations in building and equiping the Frigat that I had the honour to be appointed to Command, is stopt for the present, if there is no impropriety, I beg leave to ask for leave of absence, to make a Voyage to China. I Expect to be back in all next april – I dont wish, nor do I expect, that my pay will go on in my absence, all I wish is to Retain my rank in the Navy – I am Sir with much respect Your very Hul.
