Sir, I have received your letter of the 15^th and 24^th of March; and I transmit to you again the muster and pay rolls for February with the additions you have directed. As private business has rendered my presence necessary at Boston in New England, I have solicited a furlough from the Commandant, and to obviate objections I conceived also to resign the appointments which I hold in the Staff. The latter has not been granted; but Colonel Ronigontaine has assured me that he will not withhold his consent to my absence if you will direct me to pay the money remaining in my hands to the person, who will do the duty in my stead. I would trouble you therefore to inform me, if after the balance of my accounts be ascertained at your office this transfer could be admitted; and whether the transmission of the Paymaster's receit to whom the money is paid, will remove my further responsibility, and exonerate me from the charges standing to my debit on the books of your office. If your answer be in the affirmative, I would likewise request that I might receive from the money remaining here my pay to the 30^th of April 1796, a date which will elapfe before I leave West Point.
