Your letter of the 9th Inst and the pay Rolls for which have come to hand — In Answer thereto I have to inform you that if the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers at West point are paid up to the 1st Month before you leave West point your presence may be dispensed for any reasonable time and there will be no necessity for appointing another Officer in your place, you will therefore on that [undecipherable: score] the pay and Muster Rolls made out for the month of March and if without delay to this Office for examination and I will endeavor and use my utmost endeavours to forward the Money in time for you to compleat the payments, before the time you intend leaving the point — This mode is thought preferable to that of Transferring the duty to another Officer and the men will suffer no considerable injury from remaining in arrears of pay until your Return provided the absence does not exceed two Months the time limited by law — If you will in forwarding the pay Rolls there will be no difficulty in completing business at the time above contemplated, as I mean to forward the Money for February immediately so as to enable you to compleat the pay for that Month by the time you receive the Money for the Month of
