About eighteen Months ago I received orders from General Knox then Secretary for the department to appoint a Clerk to the Yard in this Port. In Obedience to the above mentioned order I appointed Capt Daniel Tingly to be Clerk of the Yard— he entered upon and did the duties of that office untill about a week since when he was taken Sick unfortunately taken Sick and this Morning he died.
I have thought it best to give you this information that you might if you thought proper appoint some person to act as Clerk of the Yard or give directions to some one here to make the appointment. I have the Honor to be with every sentiment of respect
