[Administrative endorsement on cover, written sideways:] [undecipherable] received 15 March / [undecipherable] 19. 96 West Point, March 11^th 1796 Sir, I have received your letter of the 24^th ultimo acknowledging mine of the 18^th and on the 8^th instant another letter from you [strikethrough: from you [undecipherable]] [undecipherable] that Nicholas [undecipherable] [undecipherable] would pay me [undecipherable] Thousand, One Hundred, Eighty Four Dollars, and Ninety Two Cents, for the hay, forage, and Subsistance of the Corps at West Point. Lieutenant William Willis will proceed to New York to receive for me the said Sum. In the list of differences on the pay roll from West Point, I observe the [undecipherable] at [undecipherable] [undecipherable] is deducted. I wrote you on the 5^th of February that he has been paid at this place for the months of December and January, and I now inclose you the Commandants orders to me to make the payment. Jordan Keifer of Capt. M^c Reed's Company is on the pay roll for January, but being as invalide was discharged by the Secretary of War on the 16^th of February. I was ordered by the Commandant not to pay him his arrears of pay, but as the man had to travel to North Carolina, and had no money in his possession, I have advanced him what his pay from the 1^st of January [undecipherable] would amount to, and am [undecipherable] if the charge be deemed inadmissible to [undecipherable] the [undecipherable]. Your directions on the Subjects of D^r Griffith and Jordan Kersey will be attended to, and will prevent future mistakes.
