Fort Le Boeuf February 9^th 1796 Sir, I arrived at this Post on the 3^d Ultima, and found it in as disagreable a situation with regard to Accomodations for myself and men and tho' that object was in some means remedied I found it impossible to attend to the settlement of my Accounts. I have inclosed Muster Pay & Receipt Rolls of the several detachments of Troops who marched from Carlisle for Pittsburgh, and also Duplicate Reciept for M^r [undecipherable] as [undecipherable] money paid, to [undecipherable] Fort [undecipherable], to be given the [undecipherable] Rolls I beg you will [undecipherable] me your examining the Receipt Rolls that the 100 Dollars transmitted to me thro' the hands of Major [undecipherable] Ricketts are there accounted for, with one Little balance [undecipherable] in my favour with you will please to have [undecipherable] to the [undecipherable] of my Account. I have also inclosed a Receipt Rolls for 1795 [undecipherable] allum and sundry being the Amount of my Pay Rolls for myself and Detachment for the Months of November & December 1795, and I have [undecipherable] to [undecipherable] Major Isaac Craig [undecipherable]M[undecipherable] at Pittsburgh. I shall so soon as [undecipherable] proceed to the settlement of my remaining Accounts and their [undecipherable] since my coming that [undecipherable] at Carlisle, but this Sir will depend upon the Season moderating in our [undecipherable]; [undecipherable] the severity at present it being extremely cold, our State being very mean, dirty and [undecipherable], and no light except what daylight appears thro the ill jointed frames of our Dilapidated roofs, except we keep the fires continually going. [undecipherable] the season here and [undecipherable] long [undecipherable] of [undecipherable] very little Garrison is at present however in good health and Spirits, having nothing to disturb us except at Night the Melodious humming of the Wolves who never fail to Serenade every Night and Morning with these enchanting notes, but sometimes they go [undecipherable] for their temerity. We have also plenty of Provisions at this Post and every thing else, except tobacco, which is sorely felt in this Country where there is none to be purchased, the Article being more in [undecipherable] in this part of the World than good Madeira in your City, and almost the same from two fellows [undecipherable] gotten being reckoned reasonable.
