Feb^y 1796 Yesterday I rec^d a letter from Th^s. Hart &Son informing me they should send by M^r Hull the bearer of the letter a bill on Phil^a for two thousand Doll^s. and M^r Hull who has rec^d the letter says his Saddle Bags were broke open on his way from Kentucky to his place and the bill with some Money taken out, and as Thomas Hart &Son of Lexington in Kentucky have sent me several bills on you in the course of Six Months past I suspect the bill above ment^d is on you also; I Shall therefore esteem it a singular favor if you will endeavor to Stop the paym^t of the said Bill, I suspect the Second bill of the same tenor &date will be forwarded to me very soon [strikethrough: it] shall be sent to you without loss of time, so that if you can with propriety stop payment for a short time, of all bills of 2000 Doll drawn on you previous to the 29. Hart &Son that Sum, and perhaps detect the villains who robb'd M^r Hulls Saddle bags, M^r Elesha Hull who will deliver this was in Company of his Brother Sam^d. Hall coming from Kentucky, when the bill, Money &c was took and will give you any further information in his power on the Subject. The letter which enclosed the bill &c I suppose was more particulars than that which I have red. in mentioning who the bill was drawn by, who on &c with much respute I am Sir your Mo^t Ob^t Serv^t.
