The officers Commanding companies did not make any pay Roll for their Companies— it is to that reason that we may ascribe the ignorance into which the Pay M.^r was kept, with regard to what was due to the men of the Corps. this time the officers will Make their pay Rolls, but to lighten the work, will you Send me printed forms of pay Rolls & Muster Rolls. if you would have the form of our Regimental pay Roll printed, it would be of great Service to M.^r Freeman. I am going to Send a New detachment to relieve the Garrison of New York. Cap.^t Staats Morris will command the detachment down to New York and will return with the other men to West point. Could you paid the Pay for the Month of Dec.^r to New York for Cap.^t Morris to take it with him to West point. he will remain in Town Long enough to receive the money that you will transmit to him. as Soon as I have procured the return of the men [undecipherable] the New York Detachment I will Send you a copy of it. Included you will find the Demand of M.^r Warein for his pay for the month of January Will you be So kind as to Send the amount of it as Soon as possible — he cannot wait a long time after his due.
