[Extract of a Letter from Samuel Hodgdon Esq^r Superintend^t of Military & Naval Stores, to John Hamilton Clerk of the yard Baltimore — dated 20^th May 1795. —] " Sir Your letter of 30^th Ult^o s 16^th Inst. came duly to hand — the adjustment of all accounts for Stores of arms description belonging to the United States, received by any person, is to be made by me. this shows the necessity of my receiving monthly Returns direct, from all persons entrusted with such property — those directed to be made to the War Office may be dispensed with, as copies, when needed may be had through me — to whom the Secretary of War will naturally Apply. — M^rs Josiah Fox Sir, Captain Truxton has mentioned since his return here, that a complaint has been made in consequence of my not rendering returns to the War Office, agreeable to the Origin — all orders issued to the clerks of the different Naval yards by Gen^l Knox — it has been my most ardent desire to comply with such instructions as have been given me from time to time since my appointment but neither my predecessor in myself, thought it necessary to make any returns, other than those to the Superintend^t of Military & Naval Stores (M^r Hodgdon) in consequence of his letter of the 20^th May last as per extract above. — I am y^r O^bt Your Most Ob^t Servant Isaac Garretson Clerk of the Yard Balt^o [Baltimore Feb^ry 8^th 1796 — Isaac Garretson Clerk of the Navy Yard. — M^r Josiah Fox Philadelphia]
