Detroit October 31. 1796. Sir I left Lexington on 27 August last and arrived in this place on the 26 September and the same day was siezed with a fever which was So Severe and dangerous, that for near 20 days my life was despaired of, I was 20 days confined to my Bed; Bute have been so far recovered for a but a Week past, as to be able to set up, and am in hopes that I have not relapse. this misfortune has thrown my business much behind hand but it cannot be helped. I have received Several letters, with enclosures from you, and Several letters from the Sec^y of war during my Journey to and from Kentucky, and during my Sickness here, but am not yet able to answer them particularly.
