West Point Department of War— Accountants' Office January 23. 1796— Sir I have received your letters of the 12^th and 19^th Inst. enclosing the receipts of Nehemiah Freeman for two thousand Six hundred and nineteen Dollars &/00, George Fleming's receipt for one thousand Doll^rs and Capt Decius Wadsworth's receipt for Twenty three Dollars and &/00, which sums will be passed to your Credit on the Books of this Office. The Note for Mr. Bache I delivered to him, who will attend to the same as directed. I reminded the Secretary of War of the men who were to be discharged, and he has given the necessary directions to his Clerk concerning them. The Officers you mention to have pay due them as Quarter Masters had better State their Accounts and transmit them here, and Steps will be taken to have them adjusted— The Accounts to be Certified by you— of the date of their Appointment — It has heretofore been the custom not to admit pay of any Officer in three different Capacities which is the case with L^t McClellan and L^t Freeman but this circumstance will be enquired into when the Accounts came forward — I am Sir William Simmons
