War-Office Nov. 24.1795. Sir, By the representation of Captain Kalteisen, I find the garrison at Fort Johnson is very ill accom-modated with quarters. The barracks are bad — there is no secure place for confining prisoners — nor any proper provision for keeping the ammunition necessary for the fort. Whether the fort should or should not be ceded to the United States, while there is a garrison of federal troops stationed there, I shall deem it my duty to provide for their being comfortably lodged; and the repairs and fastenings necessary for the preservation of the military stores and the safe keeping of prisoners must be made and provided. Captain Kalteisen will cheer-fully undertake to direct these small works; and I have a confidence that he will conduct the business properly and with economy. at any rate no engineer need be employed about them. I am so dissatisfied with M^r Brault, that I think he must be discharged: on this however I shall write again. — The small sum indispensably necessary for the above mentioned re-pairs I beg you to Supply, on Capt. Kalteisen's order for paying for materials &workmen. I will with-out delay look into your expenditures, and put you in Cash, or reimburse what small sums you may advance.
