Supervisor's Office Maryland Baltimore Novem^ber 18^th 1795 S^ir Having been absent from Baltimore since Saturday last I find on my return here a Letter dated on the 6^th instant, addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury was accompanied by several papers was by the mistake of a Gentleman in my Office enclosed in a cover directed to the Secretary of War, on the supposition of it's being a communication intended for you — of this I respectfully remember that the letter that was addressed in the usual way to M^r Woolcott I flatter myself that you will have had the kindness if the packet came to your hands, to forward it to the Secretary of the Treasury, for otherwise the subject of it must have informed you it was destined — I am very respectfully Sir your Ob^d Serv^t John Kelly Insp^r [address leaf: John Kelly / Supervisor of Md. / 21^st Nov. / Ans. d^d 3^d 1795] John Simmons Esq^r &c
