I am informed by the Judge Advocate, that I shall be ordered Shortly for Trial; If this is the Case, I must beg of Your Excellency — Permission to Resign my appointment in the United States Legion. My Reasons for requesting this of You is as follows: Having some Time since written to the Atlantic States to forward Testimonials of my Innocence; & Not Receiving Answers thereto; I fear my Letters have miscarried & must Therefore Appear before a Court Martial without an Evidence to Support the Innocence of Which I am truly conscious —
Your Excellency by, giving an early Answer will particularly oblige.
