Account of the Recent Treaty Negotiations at Fort George Between the Iroquois & New York
Document 1795Describes the recently concluded negotiations at Fort George, including the Seven Nations Indians' description of the land they claimed. States that the New York commissioners said the Indians' claim was not well-founded, but offered them $3000 for the land anyway. Says that the Indians declined, but, in good spirits, asked Wadsworth to deliver a letter to George Washington once it was written. Says he will forward copies of the entire set of proceedings once he has obtained copies of the speeches by the New York commissioners. Opines that but for one leader among them, they would never have dared to make such a land claim; also that there seem to be no individuals of great ability among them, and that while they are more civilized than some Indians, are generally "placid."
