[private] Dear Sir War Office Oct. 11. 1795. The Quarter Master General has resigned. Col.^o Meigs is in Service with the army. Gen^l M^r Wolcott & I agreed to give him charge of all the good / to the amount of near thirty thousand dollars destined for the Indian Treaty. Since then we have ordered the cloathing of the army into his hands. His pay only 40 dollars a month & 2 rations. I presume you know him perfectly. Has he capacity and energy & practical acquaintance with this kind of Service, to qualify him for Quarter Master General? His integrity I suppose unquestionable. — If Col.^o Meigs (who bore the character of an excellent officer) should not be thought eligible by you for this particular Service — can you recommend any other man well qualified & likely to accept the office?
