I acknowledged the receipt of your original and duplicate letter of the 13^th of October, and informed you that M^r Samuel Pifher had delivered to me two thousand, four hundred and fifty four dollars and forty one cents; for which sum I gave him my duplicate receit to be transmitted to the Accountant of the War Department for the due appreciation thereof. I delivered also to M^r Pifher, one dollar and one cent, with a request that he would pay the same to you as the balance of my recruiting account, which from you will be pleased to pass on the receit to my credit. The farther sum of forty eight dollars, which you also inform me has been passed to my credit, as paid to affinities, agrees with my Books. In the pay roll, which I transmitted to you for the month of September, I placed Corporal James Robertson, who joined the company at West Point on the 25^th of that month, as having due to him three months pay, making the sum of 18 dollars. Corporal William Garrison, who has pay due to him for the same term as the others of Captain Thompson's detachment, which joined on the 29^th of August, was placed on the roll for the month of September only, and his pay due fifty dollars. For the corrections of the pay roll, you sent me, I observe that five dollars are deducted from Robertson's pay, as made up in the roll from Governors Island, and 12 dollars from Garrison's is made up for July and August in a former pay roll. The two deductions making the amount of eighteen dollars. Corporal Robertson, under a supposition that the whole amount of his pay is transferred to Governours Island, has sent to Lieutenant Taylor his receit for eighteen dollars; for if I have led him into a mistake, M^r Taylor will of course refuse to pay him the money; I shall in the mean time be attentive to your other corrections in the making out of the receit rolls for September, and shall trouble you to inform me again what sum was intended to be transmitted to me for the pay of Corporals Robertson and Garrison. The mistake has more than treble arisen at West Point, by the making a remark opposite to Garrison's name instead of Robertson, although in it not to be the copy of the muster and pay roll, which I have retained. Three dollars have been stopped into the regimental chest, as the pay for July of Henry Fulford deceased, five dollars as the pay for the same month of Alexander Thompson, and four others as the pay of John Smith, both drummed out. I shall pay a particular attention to your directions on the money, which may henceforth remain in [strikethrough: the chest from] the deaths of the men, or from their being drummed out. I enclose to you a certified copy of a Letter from Lieutenant Geddes, on the 22^d of September 17^th to Colonel [undecipherable], requesting him to sign, in his absence, the receit roll for his pay. The original is in my possession I would thank you to inform me, whether this letter will be esteemed a sufficient voucher for me to pay to Colonel [undecipherable] Lieutenants Geddes' Pay.
