Carolina Charleston 21 October 1795 I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 5 Inst: acknowledging mine of [undecipherable] with Receipt from Augusta De Grasse for five Hundred and fifty two Dollars and fifty [undecipherable], Having received from the Treasurer of the United States the Sum of Two hundred and thirty Dollars which agreeably to your instructions have paid to Augusta De Grasse temporary Engineer, and inclosed you will receive his Reciept therefor Hitherto my Commissions have been charged on such Sums transmitted me from the War Office in my Accounts with the War department, and when adjusted at the Comptroller's Office the settled balance has been carried into my Supervisor's books to my Credit, in which case it would be needless to draw for my Commissions from the War department, when it may be settled on the spot with the Treasury and there placed to my Credit — my Annual and quarterly Account up to 30: September wherein is included my Commissions has already been transmitted to the Comptroller's Office — Should it be deemed necessary to keep a distinct Account for my Commissions, and that such sums be transmitted to the War Office, and not inserted in my quarterly accounts, you will be pleased to signify the same to me, — though I think the mode hitherto adopted, would save much writing, and prevent the trouble of remitting me drafts for my Commissions, when it can easily be settled at the Treasury, by giving one Credit for the amount in their books — I am Sir Your Most Ob: Servant Dan: Stevens M^r Simmons [undecipherable] Accountant War department
