[John Madder to Barn'd Merkle [undecipherable] 8 Jany 1796.] KNOW all Men by these Presents, that I John Madder Soldier in the penny [undecipherable: Line] in the Army of the United States of America, in the late War with Great Britain, for and in consideration of the sum of Eight Dollars — current money of the State of [undecipherable] to me in hand paid at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, by Bernard Merkle — have sold, transferred, and assigned, unto the said [undecipherable] North 3 Fred 10 N 18 his heirs and assigns for ever; all the right, title, interest, and claim of the land I am entitled to from the United States of America, for my services as a [undecipherable] — And I the said John — do hereby appoint the said my true and lawful Attorney, irrevocably to ask, demand, solicit, and obtain, in my name or otherwise; but for the sole use and behoof of the said Bernard of Phela his heirs and assigns forever, from the United States of America, a grant or grants, patent or patents, for the land aforesaid: hereby ratifying all and whatsoever my said Attorney may lawfully do respecting the same.
