Sir, I received your letter of the 4^th inst. stating the expediency of allowing a small number of Scouts in three of the frontier counties of Virginia; and since the Presidents return to Mount Vernon I have received your letter of the 4^th inform'd the former was communicated to the President: I was [undecipherable] to regret that there should be fresh cause of apprehension for the Indians. The expence however of two scouts to each of those counties will be so inconsiderable as to create no difficulty. The latter I will transmit to the President, and await his determination. It is proper, in the mean time that I inform your Excellency, that peace is made with all the Indian tribes on the frontiers of all parts of the States. Even the district of Mero on Cumberland, so long the scene of depredations, is now enjoying perfect tranquility. I have not yet received an official account from General Wayne but the quarter master general wrote from Head Quarters on the 3^d ult. to his deputy at Pittsburg (from whom I received it) that on that day the treaty was concluded with all the Western Indians. I cannot but hope therefore that the recent orders of [undecipherable] recalled very speedily. Nothing is to be feared except from a few scattered ruffians whom no general pacification can disarm. Against such only need any precautions be taken. Captain [undecipherable: probable reading Birtley] will have orders to receive two recruits to be provided by Joseph Morgan in lieu of his own service. The thousand dollars your Excellency was so obliging as to supply to Captain Claiborne for the support of the Indians [undecipherable] his charge shall be immediately refunded.
