War Office Sept. 12. 1795. Sir, I received your letter of the 19^th of August not till yesterday. I now inclose you one thousand dollars in post notes of the United States Bank. You will see they are payable only to you or your order. So when you exchange them for cash or pay them away, you will indorse them. This sum is sent on account of the contingent Supplies and expences of your department. As to your Salary, I think it had better be paid quarterly or half yearly, as will be most convenient to you. M^r Parish's the same. As your brother, and perhaps other traders, have remittances to make to New York, could you not through them obtain all the money which the public service under your direction shall require? Your draughts on me, payable here or in New York, as shall best suit the parties, will be paid without delay. You will be pleased to sign the inclosed receipt for the present remittance, and send it to me by the first post.
