Springfield 8^th Sep. 1795 Sir, Ensign Remington is in a deplorable situation — Intemperance has reduced his health, and imprudence his credit — His creditors have arrested his body at the same instant that I was reduced to the necessity of ordering him in arrest — He is in close confinement, with friendless moneyless and without credit — From the use he has made of recruiting money which I have put in his hands I do not feel safe in trusting him further — If his arrears of pay could be forwarded he may probably extricate himself from civil arrest, refund the bounty money, and have means to get to his connexions which I consider the fittest plan for him; for wherever it is, the public will never be benefitted by any service he will ever under— It is painful to make this statement; but they are facts which cannot be trifled with — The man who had the address to obtain En^s. Remington's appointment merits no thanks from his country; for it was notorious that dissipation and debauchery had rendered him unfit for public service or confidence — So soon as his pay arrives I shall take the liberty to discharge him, that his patron may have the pleasure of his society till he is bold to leave or obtain leave to resign — I am very respectfully Sir, your Obedient & very humble Serv^t.
