[M] Philadelphia 3^d Sept^r 1795. 149 Sir I have this moment received your Letter of this date. I take the earliest Means to inform you that I have not been so fortunate as to receive Answers to Letters, written to Cap^t Hame and M^r Moore; so long ago as the 17 & 18 Ult^o. — And having had no Intimation of the late Circumstances, to which you allude, but from very vague and, I am convinced aggravated Reports, I can form no Judgment of the Operation they may have had upon the mind of the President of the United States in accelerating any Measures, the President may contemplate in Respect to Cap^t Hame. If it be deemed improper to suspend the Determination — I trust I shall be apprized of the Tendency of the Measures, as soon as may be consistent with your convenience, that I may take the earliest Opportunity of making the proper Communications to his Majesty's Ministers. I think it necessary to observe to you, that I have, by repeated Letters, endeavour'd to ascertain the real Truth of this Case — : I feel therefore conscious that I have done all that was incumbent upon me to do : That I have fulfilled in Point of Respect what was due to your Representations and that I have discharged the Obligations I owe to his Majesty's Officers — whose Conduct is implyed in your Representations — : I can then, only, lament Sir, that any Accidents should have delayed the Explanations I have every Reason to expect, upon the receipts of Letters from Newport; — which I understand in the ordinary Course of Communication I ought to have been in Possession of many Days ago.
