I have Received yours Mentioning the time of my appointment as the 12th of may not being the real Date by my having wrote to the Secretary of war that I Should prefer to decline if the objections that I made at the time could not be removed; but I have to observe to you that from the day that I Received my appointment to the date of my letter, and after, I had been Surveying the river, and made Drafts which where lodged in the office of war and that I had even been Subject to expences that I have never mentioned
the only instructions that I can give to your request, is that the Secretary of wars answer to my letter, are dated 2d of June desiring me to continue and announcing me that he had received my plans and informations; So that I [strikethrough: wrote] with you to informe the Secretary of war that from the 12th of may to the Second of June I was employed about the Bu[undecipherable] as may be known by my letters to the former Secreti of war general Knox.
