[Endorsement, rotated: [undecipherable: probable reading Dennis] Hall / [undecipherable] / Lieut [undecipherable] A.&E.] Portland Sept 19. 1795 Sir I enclose you the Muster roll & pay roll of my recruits for the months of July & August together with vouchers for the balance of the sum remitted for pay of the recruits till the 20^th of June last. — Two causes have conspired to delay me in transmitting the vouchers — incidental delay in drawing the money from the Supervisor, & the necessity of sending to West Point for Ebenezer Thompson's recpt.— I have ventured to include Joseph Cole on the pay roll, deducting the time he was absent by desertion. Thirteen Dollars & eleven cents were expended in apprehending & securing him & John Cole, his brother. You will probably be able to determine whether this sum ought to be deducted from their pay. Should that be your opinion I suppose half of it should be stopped from Joseph's pay. — I have, however, inserted what I conceived to be his whole pay from the time I formerly mustered him. John Cole yet remains in custody of the civil law. It is very obvious, that he was [underline: rescued] from me, merely to prevent his being sent back to West Point. His [underline: nominal] creditor now avows it to be his intention to hold him confined during the term of his inlistment. It is my intention to send Sergt. Moses with Joseph Cole, Abner Cole & Tristain Cole to Capt. Foye, to be by him forwarded to West Point; as the Captain informs me he has several recruits whom he wishes to forward thither.
