I received the 8 instant a letter from the Deputy Supervisor of the district of New York advising me of $279 [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] transmitted by the War department to the Supervisors Office for me. The day I received the letter I wrote triplicate receipts for said money, (having been in great want of it) and forwarded them to Col^o Fish, requesting him to deposit it in the Branch bank for me. You will much oblige me by sending me a statement of my account to the 30^th of June last. Doctor Canton is gone, also the 30 dollars. He owed every person he could inveigle to lend him money or trust him. There was no possibility of his securing the public, even if he had inclined to. I am, Sir, Your most obedient Humble servant G.
