Sir,
In the absence of Major Craig,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of
the 31st Instant and its enclosures.
On the 3d Ulto I received a letter
from Major Craig dated at Fort Detroit, in which
he informs me, that the means of transportation
by land from this Post to Presque Isle must be
[strikethrough: considered] and positively Instructing me to purchase
[strikethrough: considerably] thirty Pack horses in addition to those purchased
previous to his departure. He has not furnished
me Money for this purpose on a Supposition that
you would have forwarded three thousand Dollars
by this days Mark. This Money not coming as
expected will consequently derange the business much
I having already borrowed a considerable Sum
under promise of replacing it this day which I
am not enabled to do —
I am very respectfully
