[Endorsement: from [undecipherable] Freeman / Rec'd Aug 11^th 1795] West Point, August 6^th 1795 Sir, I inclose to you for the month of July, a muster and pay roll of the corps of Artificers and Engineers at West Point; by which there appear due for that month, to the corps at its garrison one thousand, eight hundred and seventy two dollars, and thirty six cents, exclusive of what may be allowed to such part of the Staff of the corps, as have not yet had their pay made up. I have calculated in this roll, agreeably & my instructions, the pay of the deserters to the date of their elopement. I have received your letter of the 25^th ultimo. It informs me, that the balance of one dollar and one cent is, as I have stated in my recruiting account current, due to the United States. You will have observed, that there are due to one of the men, whom I have inlisted and who is now present at West Point, the bounty of four dollars. If you will transmit to him two dollars and ninety nine cents, and order me to pay him one dollar and one cent, I will send you his receipt for the amount of bounty due; or if more agreeable to you, you will deduct one dollar and one cent out of my monthly pay for July. In either case, you will be pleased to exonerate me from the charges, now standing to my debit, for monies placed in my hands for the recruiting Service. I wrote you in some haste on the 4^th instant to explain a difference which will [strikethrough: not] appear in the number of men on the muster roll, I now send you, and the number on the monthly return made out on the 1^st of August by the adjutant, and transmitted the last post, by the commanding officer, to the Secretary of War.
