[undecipherable] Aug^t 95] West Point August 4^th 1795 Sir, In examining the muster and pay rolls which I am now making up to the 31^st of July, with the return of the corps made out by the Adjutant, and which is already transmitted by the Commanding officer to the Secretary of War, I find there is a disagreement between us. It is found that in the adjutants return there are for the total present 280 men; in the paymasters muster roll 276. This difference arises from, promotions having taken place on the part of [undecipherable] from one company into another. At present the first company of the third battalion stands at 26 men instead of 29; and the fourth company of the fourth Battalion stands at 26 instead of 27, men which makes the number 276. the effective effective strength at present of the corps. I would further observe there are three artificers in Captain M^c Ree's company instead of two who are on the adjutants return; and an artificer was reduced from the 1^st. of August was reduced to the ranks. It is the Commanding officer's order that in future the adjutants monthly return, and the paymasters monthly muster and pay rolls, should be made out to the same date.
