The amounts rendered by you have all been examined and stated, and after charging you with the sum of 2,669 [undecipherable] of Dec Lawton there remains a balance against you of 1,31475 which sum will be carried to your debit on your next Account. this balance is 26075 Dollars short of the sum against you agreeable to your own Statement, owing to Sunday errors having been discovered favoring a Copy of which I herewith enclose to you.
There will be transmitted to you through the hands of Col Fiske the sum of 6000 Dollars for the Contingent and Incidental expences at West Point; in the disbursement thereof I would recommend to you to use the greatest frugality and economy, and to be particular in having all your charges supported by sufficient and well authenticated Vouchers, not to let the Receipt for the payment be the only evidence that the Article was furnished or that the services were performed — It would very much facilitate the examination and settlement of your Accounts if you would be particular in classing your Sundry disbursements under their several general heads, and to pay the men employed by you for those Extras pay on payrolls founded on Muster Shewing that they were actually employed &c.
It is expected that from the Number of Artificers lately arrived at West Point by the Corps assembling there, that the expences of hiring will be greatly lessened.
You will also receive 279 Dollars for the pay of
