War Office July 31. 1795.
Sir,
The Governor of New York, in pursuance of a law of the State, has requested the President of the United States, to appoint a Commissioner to hold a treaty with the St. Regis Indians, to afford to New York an opportunity to extinguish their claims to lands in the northern parts of that State. The President assents to the measure, and tenders to you the office of Commissioner, which I hope the situation of your affairs will permit you to accept. The time proposed by Governor Jay for holding the treaty is about the middle (not later) of next September. He writes me that he shall appoint three agents on the part of the State to negotiate the purchase of the Indians. The place of treaty is to be Fort George, at the South end of Lake George.
I request your speedy answer, that if any circumstances should prevent your acceptance of the office of Commissioner it may be time to make other application.
I am very respectfully,
Sir, your obt. Servt.
