Extract of a Letter from General Robertson to Governor Blount
dated Knoxville July 9th 1795
Sir
Since writing to you on the 7. June I have received information, the truth of which is not to be doubted that the Spanish government have actually erected a Blockhouse, a Stockade fort and planted Cannon at the Chickasaw Bluff upon the East
Past bank of the Mississippi within the limits of the Territory, unless the Governor of the Natchez was himself present at the erection of these works as appears by the information of several white people who saw and spoke to him, one of whom he informed that he was determined to keep up a garrison at that place — He came up the river with three ladies which continued opposite to the Bluff until the materials for erecting the Blockhouse were prepared, upon the West side of the river brought over to the East side, and the Blockhouse, Stockade &c erected all which was done with great haste. The Chickasaws have applied to me as your Excellency will see by William Glover's letter of the 12 June herewith forwarded, to move the Spaniards from that place. To this request I can give no answer until I receive your Instructions as to what I shall answer, which I presume I am not to get until you shall have reported the movements of parties to the President and receive his answer —
I have the honor to be with great respect
