Portland July 2^d 1795 Sir. Enclosed you have a muster roll & pay roll of my recruits for the months of May & June. You will observe that, tho' John Cole Jun. & Joseph Cole are entered on the muster roll, as being present; yet they are not entered on the pay roll. The reason is, that I was not certain whether their pay should cease from the time they deserted till they were taken, or whether John Cole would be allowed pay while he remains in custody of the civil law. I take liberty to observe that no returns have been had from the War Department on the Musters of March & April.
