No. 25^th [undecipherable] account of work done & to the [undecipherable] in mentioning the use of workmen employ'd] [1798] [free] [a Springfield June 20] [The Secretary of War Philadelphia] June 20 1795 A return of worke done in the Ordnance Department at Springfield 13 Carriages for 5¾ Inch ^Howitzers finished all but boxing the Wh[eels] 30 Carriages for 3 pounders finished 20 Carriage bodys for 6 Pounders Ironed 24 wheels for 6 Pounders finished all to boxing & Painting 28 wheels for 6 Pounders finished ^all to the tire & Boxing the side boxes for 28 six pounders nearly Compleet 8 pair of Limbers for 6 Pounders finished all to Painting 20 pairs of Limbers for 6 Pounders finished all but the Iron worke 20 wheels for 6 Pounders repaired 20 hubs turnd for 6 Pounders I have employed five Blacksmiths that workes for six shillings ꝑ day, and one that workes for five shillings ꝑ day on account of his having the Tools that belong to the United States five men employed in bloing and striking, They have three Shillings and sixpence ꝑ day five Carpenters and Wheelwrights at six shillings ꝑ day they have two apprentices one has five shillings ꝑ day and the other four shillings and sixpence each man finds his Provision & Tools The men have not been Constantly at worke They have lost many days worke by being sick or absent I shall be much obliged to you to send me or ten or twelve hundred dollars, as I am in debt for articles furnished for the Use of the United States, and the workmen have several Months pay due, and want their mony very much.
