[Endorsed: 1795 / June 20^th / From Timothy Pickering / at War respecting the esta- / blishment at Presque Isle / and [undecipherable] supplies / Two Copies to be Examined / for the Legislature] [Address: His Excellency / The Governor of Pennsylvania] [War Department] War Office June 20. 1795 Sir, The President of the United States has referred me to your letter of yesterday's date, forwith his instructions, anticipating the necessity of permitting troops in the present service of the United States to make the more permanent Establishment at Presque Isle. I wrote last week to Col. Butler at Pittsburg, to fix his eye upon an officer suitable for this particular command. I could then do no more, not having consulted the President. He now consents to the measure contemplated; and by this day's post I shall send orders for marching the troops which I propose to assign for that service. When completed, I mean that they should be able to make the establishment independent of the assistance formerly expected from the State of Pennsylvania. Col. Biddle has informed me that provisions for four months for the troops intended to have been raised by the State have been transported to Le Boeuf. I shall depend on these supplies for the troops of the United States now to be ordered to Presque Isle. I am very respectfully Yr. ob't servant T.
