Janbo[undecipherable: r+Engro?] Dao. a 1798] Portland May 10^th 1795 Sir, Having paid my recruits agreeably to the instructions contained in your letter of the 16^th ultimo — I return you the receipt with the [undecipherable] for the application of the Money — You will observe that one of the men has not receipted, or subscribed his account, viz: Nicholas Smith — the reason is, he has deserted as you will see by the enclosed Muster-Rolls. This dividend of the money will be subject to your, or the secretary's instruction. The money remitted on the 28^th ultimo has not yet come to hand. As the bounty for inlistment has been augmented by a late act, a query arises with me what proportion of the inlisting bounty it is expected that I should pay? And whether I should pay the additional bounty or any part thereof to the recruits who were inlisted previous to the passing of that act, to remain still with me — they having received only the original eight Dollars p. man.
