May 12^th 179[–] Sir Upon inquiry at th[is] Office I am informed that your recruiting instructi[ons] have been forwarded you — I presume that the men th[at] have returned inlisted by you were included in [the] [undecipherable: probable reading: Betsell's] Muster Roll, if not you will muster them ag[ree-] ably to your instructions, and from the Muster Ro[ll] make out a Payroll and transmit them to this Offi[ce] on receipt of which an examination will take place[,] the money transmitted to the Supervisor to be paid t[o] [them.] I understand that you are to remain a[t] Middl[etown] on the recruiting service in which case you will pleas[e] observe the regulation of making out your pay rolls an[d re-] mitting them as above directed for which purpose you ar[e to] receive herewith Blank Muster and Pay rolls. — — I am Sir Y^r William Simmon[s]
